An annual fun triathlon for all ages to raise funds for the Savary Island Volunteer Fire Department
Savary Island celebrates the 19th annual Fun Triathlon benefitting the Savary Island Volunteer Fire Department (SIVFD) on July 21, 2019. As a registered non-profit, the focus of this event to continue on the tradition of a fun day on the island for the whole family while helping out the SIVFD. We invite individuals and relay teams of all abilities to challenge themselves to complete a short/sprint distance triathlon. We are willing to make any accomodations necessary for everyone to have fun participating. For example, in the "recreational" category, individuals can water-run in the ocean instead of swim. The course will take you from one end of the island to the other: along the ocean coastline, up sandy roads, and down trails.
If you have not had the treat of visiting Savary Island yet, it is a unique destination located just northwest of Powell River. The summers are warm with clear ocean water along white sand beaches and a laid back atmosphere. You may choose to come for the day on the 8AM water taxi from Lund, or to stay for the night or week in a rental cabin or lodge.
A special part of this event is that several members of the Clansman Pipe Band of Powell River always lead the parade of athletes from the boat ramp to the wharf to start off the race. Affiliated with Branch 164 (Powell River) of the Royal Canadian Legion, the Clansman Pipe Band has performed at community events in the Powell River area, on the Sechelt Peninsula and on Vancouver Island for well over forty years. Despite its isolated location, the band has ensured its continued existence thanks in large part to an active teaching program. The band welcomes into its ranks all those, regardless of age, who demonstrate an interest in and commitment to piping or drumming. The band currently has students ranging in age from 10 to over 60. We thank the Clansman Pipe Band for their extended commitment to making this event so unique.
